Pink and Xtina Beef??? What's Beef, pt. 2!

Looks like Xtina has beef with all the people she's copied. I'm just waiting for her to start beefing with Etta James now, lol. I wrote about how Xtina copies Pink already with the Linda Perry thing, the "oh woe is me" lyrics, the album art and all, so let's not tread there again. But among the people Aguilera has made disparaging remarks about are all the people who have "influenced" *cough* her own music and style. Did Xtina not talk about how she grew up singing Mariah Carey's songs? And her overdone vocal style does *NOT* come from Etta James or any of her name-dropped legends. Nope, that's the Mariah influence right there, where the notes are there just for the sake of being there, lol. And did Xtina's first album not tread the same waters that her other former rival Britney Spears popularized with her first album? And did her second album not find its inspiration (and producer) from Pink's second album? And did her "dirrty" style not rehash what Black R&B and rap perfomers had been doing for the last 10 years at that point: parading around half-naked? And what Madonna had done nearly 2 decades before also? And not to mention the latest character she's playing. Madonna covered that territory already, so did Janet Jackson to a lesser extent.

And the album art again. Hmmm....

I don't know. Xtina is just really starting to rub me the wrong way. She isn't a legend yet; and quite frankly I don't think she will EVER become more than another name mentioned when people are already talking or writing about Mariah or Britney. At least not until she does something *honest* because that's the one thing missing from ALL of her albums: honesty. She's always forced, fake, and trying too hard to portray some character or image. There isn't anything particularly unique about her. Everything that she's done in her career up to now has been done already. I think she needs to show more respect to the people who have set the pace and the space for her. These ARE people like Mariah, Madonna, Britney, and Pink. No matter how much name-dropping she does of Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, it's clear who her REAL inspirations are and that still even comes across on this latest album: all the people she's dissed. Aguilera = not an artist, I'm afraid. A good singer, but that's about all there is to Xtina right now. (And there are a LOT of good singers out there that nobody paid attention to just because they weren't blond and half-naked.) She hasn't set any trends or done anything new. None of her songs are destined to any kind of memorability or "classic" status. She even dissed Beyonce too, but that's pretty much all she is right now: another Beyonce. Maybe she can dump on Mariah when she's achieved one-third of the things that Mariah achieved... in her first 5 years no less (10 #1's already). Heck, Britney can claim more of a "legend" status than Aguilera can right now. "Baby One More Time" and "Oops" are damn near iconic for the decade.

So yeah, she's just really starting to bother me. Or maybe it's all the tacky red lipstick.

Here are a few tunes I have from some of the talented multi-octave, 7th octave and whistle register singers mentioned in the entry. I don't have songs from all of them, and I don't have the record-setting songs for many of them. But you can get a taste here and if you like what you hear, check them out on your own. :-D

Minnie Riperton- Lovin' You; (the classic. Shanice has recorded this song twice actually, the latest version being on Every Woman Dreams. )
Mariah Carey- Emotions; (nothing short of amazing. She hits two really high notes in this song that I just cannot hear on the record. I didn't even know the notes were there until I saw live performances of this. AMAZING. Even now that I know they're there... I still can't hear them.)
Shanice- Fly Away; (this is one of Shanice's record-setting songs. She hits the whistle register towards the end of the song, in the last few seconds.)
Shanice- Never Changing Love; (The note she hits towards the end of the song is my favorite Shanice note ever. It's so full and billowy; she's more than capable at singing in the whistle register at full power like Mariah.)
Lisa Fischer- How Can I Ease the Pain; (Nothing short of impressive, again.)
Whitney Houston- I Believe in You & Me; (Folks have forgotten Whitney, but this song shows what a lovely, POWERFUL voice she has. She goes from deep and soulful to approaching bird-levels here.)
Terry Ellis- Wherever You Are; (Terry was a member of En Vogue and released a solo album in 1995, I believe. Anyway, she has a soft and delicate voice, and she hits those notes like a bird to a flower!)
Chante Moore- Wey U; (She hits one of her highest notes towards the end of this song. Geez, I didn't even know it was note until yesterday, actually. I always thought that was an instrument because of the way the vocals are layered. Anyway, it'll sound like an instrument, but that's one of Chante's highest notes towards the end of this song. Incredible.)
Tamar Braxton- Money Can't Buy You Love; (Forgot about her, but she hits the whistle register here also. Toni's little sister, Tamar has an incredible range. She can get from the whistle register to sounding like Toni at the highest point of her range.)
Rachelle Farrell- Wound in the Way; (This isn't one of her record-setters, but it's the only song I have. Sad, I know. She supposedly has a 6-octave vocal range, which would place her atop Mariah and Minnie. I believe it too. I've heard more songs from her than just this, but I still need to buy them, heh...)
Tisha Campbell & Tichina Arnold- Don't Ask My Neighbor; (Tisha Campbell, yes the actress, is someone else who can hit the whistle register. She released an album waaaay back in the early 90s, and this song was on a film soundtrack in 1996. You can hear her get there in this song.)
Jessica Simpson- I Wanna Love You Forever; (Why Jess stopped singing, I'll never know... Hopefully there's something as good as this on her new album.)
Monica- Why I Love You So Much; (One of my fave Monica songs. I don't remember if she reaches her highs here, but she definitely reaches her lows here. 4 octaves doesn't surprise me one bit with Monica, now that I think about it. This is a far cry from "Beat Drop", Monica...)
Britney Spears- Luv the Hurt Away; (Ha, Britney doesn't even sound like Britney here! This is an old unreleased track, but it just leaked earlier this year.)

Feeling a little jazzy?

While everyone's buzzin' and excited about Xtina's new jazzy sound, I thought it would be a good opportunity to promote some other albums that have explored this sound. These are just the few I have in my collection and have personally enjoyed, I'm sure there are many others.

Lina's 2001 release, Stranger on Earth is a very jazzy, but modern debut. This lady has a fabulous voice, and according to Wikipedia can sing in 7 different languages, ha. But don't worry, there's only English here. :-p Here's one of the more upbeat/jazzy numbers from this album, and one of my faves, "Watch Your Mouth (Baby Blue)". Best opening line in a song ever: "It don't turn me on when you say my ass is fat". :-p Ha, gotta love Lina. She also worked with DJ Premier on this album, and mixes up that jazz/blues/hip-hop sound very well. Her second album, the Inner Beauty Movement, found Lina embracing more of the stereotypical neosoul sound, but it still has it's jazzy moments such as on the track "My Fix" (download it there).

Esthero is someone that I will pimp until the end of time. I'm so glad I discovered her music last year. Yeah, she kinda looks like Pink... and she kinda sounds like Pink, just a little... and she's just as kick-ass and awesome as Pink, but that's not the point! Her 2005 release, Wikked Lil' Grrls was flat-out incredible. Some of her older fans from her gloomy trip-hop debut in 1997 raked her through the coals for making such a poppy album, but it's damn good. If you liked Xtina's jazzy pop sound... you'll LOVE Esthero's. My favorite bangin' joint on this album is "If Tha Mood" of course. If you didn't get that one back then, too bad, go buy this album! But here's another equally wikked track, "Wikked Lil' Grrls". Enjoy and support Esthero! Buy this album! She really needs to do a song with Pink, that would be the hottest ish you've never heard...

Billy Miles' debut album was released in 2004, but I just discovered it last year. Unfortunately, this little gem went by unnoticed by most. Anyway, I love this album. Billy has a delightful, unique voice. Just the right amount of sass and soul. Her songs are more like trip-hop than anything else, but she blends sounds also, so her songs all have pop, jazz, and soul influences. Really a joy to hear. I hope she releases new music and finds success! Hopefully Xtina's success will open some doors for unique sounds. It's not my favorite track on the album, but I talked about it and I may have piqued interest in the lyrics. :-p Musically, it's one of the best songs on the album though.
